The Beckmann is a self-retaining, finger-ring retractor characterized by its hinged (articulated) shanks and multi-pronged 3×4 or 4×4 jaws. Unlike standard fixed retractors, the articulated shanks allow the “beast” to conform to the patient’s lateral anatomy, ensuring the handles lie flat and out of the surgical field. It is the primary choice for surgeons performing multi-level laminectomies, spinal fusions, and discectomies where deep, wide-field soft tissue retraction is mandatory.
